God and mammon

“No servant can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and mammon.” Who or what is your god? Is it God, the Father of our holy Savior Jesus Christ, who sent forth the Holy Spirit? Or, do you possess some other god…a false god…like your own acquisition of greater wealth, fame, power and influence, social status, political influence or any other false gods? Is your source of Truth now Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Comcast, any government body, or maybe some Wall Street tycoon and his or her financial tools and toys? Where are you in this one lifetime? Does God matter at all to you and HOW you freely choose to live out each and every hour of your days? Does God really matter to you? Only YOU can truthfully answer this profound question in a full and brutally honest manner. No one else can answer this question for you. I remind you, others and myself that God indeed extends unto you and all people this gift of life. What might you have done to merit this undeserved gift? Anything at all? Who or what is your god? Reality and history confirm the existence of false gods. This is most apparent in societies which more so than not have developed into societies where food, clothing and shelter are no longer the major and most important concerns.

Our own society has grown quite complacent, even indifferent to the very real, serious and growing poverty across our nation, even here in our local communities, and sadly around the globe. Still, we remind ourselves that we need not worry about someone else’s problems because they are not MY OWN problems. Why should I care about some slob, some lazy man or woman, or the fool who drinks and gets drunk, or uses drugs? These are NOT my problems. They are NOT my concern and I am not responsible for those foolish enough to get drunk or high.

You might think, “too bad for them”. They are not my concern. Do these sound like words which might go through your mind, heart or spirit? I hope not! But maybe they do permeate your daily life. If so, then pray and ask yourself, “what would Christ do?” Who speaks to you, and through you? Is it our one true Father and Creator, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the wisdom of the Holy Spirit? Or do you have some other god or gods??

Listen and hear our dear Lord. He speaks to you and through you. The prophet Amos writes, “Hear this, you who trample upon the needy and destroy the poor of the land!” Never will our dear Lord forget what we have done. Moses reminds us that, we are “not to worship false gods.

May we as gifts of God be attentive to the Gospel message. May we always seek to see, recognize and acknowledge that indeed every human life is sacred, precious and holy. Every person possesses a God-created innate dignity and goodness. Things will always be mere things. Mammon, wealth, power and fame are all fleeting. In contrast, life in Christ is eternal. The choices are yours. Who is your false god, or is it our One True God?
